NYC Marathon Announces Ambitious Plan for Sustainability in 2024
The New York City Marathon announced today an ambitious plan to make the iconic race more sustainable in 2024, pledging to cut waste by 50% and reduce its carbon footprint. The initiative, launched by the New York Road Runners (NYRR), includes eco-friendly water stations, biodegradable race bibs, and the elimination of single-use plastics.
“We want the NYC Marathon to be a model for sustainability in the sports world,” said NYRR CEO Ted Metellus. “Our goal is to inspire change and protect the environment while continuing to deliver an exceptional experience for runners and spectators.”
The plan has been welcomed by environmental groups, who have long criticized the environmental impact of large-scale events. However, some logistical challenges remain, such as ensuring adequate hydration for runners without the traditional plastic cups.
The 2024 race, set for November, will also feature a new app for spectators to track runners and receive updates on sustainability efforts. Registration for the marathon opens next month, with organizers expecting over 50,000 participants.
