The exhibit explores the challenges marine ecosystems face due to climate change, overfishing, and pollution, while also celebrating the efforts of scientists, Indigenous communities, and activists working to protect them.
“This exhibit reminds us of our shared responsibility to safeguard the oceans for future generations,” said museum president Ellen V. Futter at the grand opening. Visitors can explore interactive displays, including a walk-through replica of a coral reef and a virtual reality experience that simulates swimming alongside marine life like whales, dolphins, and manta rays.
The exhibit also highlights groundbreaking research and technologies used in ocean conservation, from robotic submarines to plastic pollution clean-up initiatives. A section dedicated to solutions encourages visitors to take actionable steps, such as reducing single-use plastics and supporting sustainable seafood practices.
Environmental advocates and families alike praised the exhibit for its educational value and immersive design. Running through summer 2025, Oceans: Guardians of the Deep aims to inspire visitors to deepen their connection to the natural world and join efforts to protect Earth’s waterways.
