Billy Joel Cancels All Upcoming Concerts Due to Health Diagnosis
LOS ANGELES – Renowned musician Billy Joel has officially canceled all future performances after a recent medical diagnosis.
Announcement of Cancellations
On Thursday, Joel, age 76, announced via his official website that he will be ending his record-setting residency at Madison Square Garden in July 2024, after nearly ten years and approximately 150 concerts. The first of the last ten performances is scheduled for October 20, 2023.
Health Concerns
The cancellations adhere to the musician’s recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), which has affected his hearing, vision, and balance, particularly after performances. “This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances,” the statement elaborated. Joel is following medical advice and undergoing physical therapy.
In a social media post, Joel expressed gratitude for the care he is receiving and his commitment to prioritizing his health. He stated, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
Understanding Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
NPH is a brain disorder characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, symptoms may include cognitive issues, difficulties with walking, and loss of bladder control. Treatment may involve surgery to insert a shunt to drain excess fluid, although success varies by individual.
Ticket Refunds
For fans holding tickets to canceled shows, the website reassured that refunds would be processed automatically, using the original payment method. No action will be required from the ticket holders to receive their refunds.
