Broadway’s winter season welcomed a poignant new addition with the arrival of Days of Wine and Roses, a musical adaptation of the 1962 film and 1958 teleplay by JP Miller. The production officially opened at Studio 54 on January 28, 2024, following previews that began on January 6. Directed by Michael Greif, with a score by Adam Guettel and a book by Craig Lucas, the musical stars Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James as a couple whose romance is marred by the grip of alcoholism.

Set in 1950s New York, Days of Wine and Roses follows Joe Clay, a Korean War veteran and public relations professional, and Kirsten Arnesen, a secretary with a sheltered upbringing. Their whirlwind romance begins with shared drinks and quickly spirals into mutual dependence on alcohol, leading to personal and relational turmoil. The narrative delves into the complexities of addiction, portraying the couple’s struggles with raw honesty.

This production marks the first collaboration between Guettel and Lucas since their acclaimed 2005 musical The Light in the Piazza. Guettel’s score for Days of Wine and Roses is characterized by its jazz-inflected melodies and operatic undertones, eschewing traditional show tunes for a more somber and introspective musical landscape. The music serves to underscore the emotional depth of the characters’ journey, enhancing the narrative’s impact.

Critics have lauded the performances of O’Hara and d’Arcy James, noting their compelling portrayal of a couple ensnared by addiction. The New York Times highlighted the production’s “jazzy, aching” quality, while The Guardian praised its unflinching depiction of the characters’ descent. The musical’s commitment to exploring the darker facets of human experience has resonated with audiences and reviewers alike.

The staging of Days of Wine and Roses contributes significantly to its immersive quality. Lizzie Clachan’s scenic design evokes a mid-century aesthetic, while Dede Ayite’s costumes and David Brian Brown’s hair and wig designs further establish the period setting. The absence of an intermission intensifies the audience’s engagement, mirroring the relentless progression of the characters’ struggles.

The production has garnered several accolades, including Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical for both O’Hara and d’Arcy James. It also received nominations for Tony Awards in categories such as Best Original Score and Best Actor and Actress in a Musical. These honors reflect the industry’s recognition of the musical’s artistic achievements.

Days of Wine and Roses stands as a testament to Broadway’s capacity to tackle challenging subjects with nuance and artistry. Through its powerful performances and evocative score, the musical offers a compelling exploration of love, addiction, and the human condition.
