Paramount Global Settles Trump Lawsuit Over ’60 Minutes’ Interview, Sparking Political and Media Backlash

by NY Review Contributor

Paramount Global has agreed to a $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump, resolving a high-profile lawsuit related to a “60 Minutes” interview aired in October 2024. The interview, which featured then-Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, included footage of Trump that his legal team claimed was deceptively edited to misrepresent his views, particularly on the 2020 election and women’s rights—topics that were central to the heated campaign season.

Trump filed the lawsuit in November 2024, alleging defamation and election interference. While legal experts widely viewed the case as lacking strong legal grounds, Paramount opted to settle after months of mediation, citing the need to “protect corporate interests and reduce prolonged litigation risk,” according to internal sources.

The terms of the settlement include a $15 million donation to Trump’s future presidential library and $1 million to cover legal expenses. Importantly, Paramount admitted no wrongdoing and offered no apology. However, as part of the agreement, CBS News will now release full transcripts of interviews with U.S. presidential candidates following their broadcasts—albeit with potential redactions for security and editorial standards.

The settlement has triggered immediate and widespread backlash from journalism advocates, politicians, and within Paramount’s own news division. Legendary news anchor Dan Rather labeled the deal a “sell-out to extortion,” warning that the payout to a sitting political figure undermines the integrity and independence of the press. “It’s not just about one story—it’s about the precedent this sets for all future political coverage,” Rather said in a statement.

Inside CBS News, the fallout was swift. Bill Owens, the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” and Wendy McMahon, the president of CBS News, both resigned following the announcement. Sources within the organization described a growing sense of unease and a belief that journalistic standards had been compromised to protect a larger corporate agenda.

That agenda includes Paramount’s ongoing $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media—a deal currently under review by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The timing of the settlement has raised alarms among lawmakers, some of whom view it as a calculated move to remove political obstacles to the merger. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has called for a formal investigation, stating in a letter to the FCC that the payment “has the appearance of a corporate bribe” designed to curry favor with Trump, who could return to office if he wins the 2024 election challenge.

“This isn’t just a media ethics issue—it’s a democracy issue,” Warren added. “When a media company pays off a political figure amid regulatory negotiations, the American public has a right to know what’s really happening.”

While Paramount maintains the settlement was a strategic business decision unrelated to the merger, critics argue it signals a dangerous convergence of political power and media influence. Media law experts have also warned that the agreement could encourage other politicians to pressure media outlets through litigation threats, ultimately chilling investigative journalism and public accountability.

For Trump, the settlement represents a public relations victory and further energizes his base ahead of the Republican National Convention later this month. His campaign released a statement claiming vindication, saying, “President Trump has once again held the fake news media accountable for its lies.”

As the political and legal fallout continues, the case highlights the fragile boundaries between media, politics, and corporate interest. The situation has drawn renewed attention to the need for robust protections for editorial independence, especially as the 2024 presidential election heads into its final stages.
