We’re only a few days into 2025, but New York City has already seen some horrific crimes. FOX 5 NY’s Dan Bowens breaks down some of the biggest crime headlines, including a mass shooting in Queens, a postal worker stabbed to death in Harlem, and a spike in subway assaults.
new york – A 50-year-old man was shot and killed by NYPD officers in Brooklyn on Friday night and taken into custody.
Police shooting in Canarsie
Timeline:
NYPD Chief of Patrol Phillip Rivera said at a late-night news conference that the shooting occurred after officers heard gunshots while patrolling Canarsie.
Around 9:45 p.m., four uniformed officers in two unmarked vehicles heard a single gunshot near Flatlands Avenue and East 80th Street. They observed a man exit the convenience store at 776 E 80th Street and run northbound.
Officers pursued the man on foot and in a vehicle, identified him and told him to stop.
Rivera said the gunman ran behind a tree and pointed a gun at a uniformed sergeant, prompting four officers to open fire.
What we know:
The man was struck in the torso and taken into custody. He was taken to Brookdale University Hospital in critical condition. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and a ghost gun was also found inside the store.
What they say:
“Our officers responded without hesitation when faced with a dangerous individual armed with a firearm. Their actions prevented further violence,” Rivera said.
What we don’t know:
Police have not released the name of the man who was shot and killed after pointing a gun at officers. It is unclear why the ghost gun was found at the convenience store or why it was fired before police pursued it.
