New York City Public Schools Launch Free On-Site Mental Health Services

Part of the Healthy Minds NYC Program

In a major effort to address the mental health crisis among young people, New York City public schools began offering free on-site mental health services today. This initiative, part of the Healthy Minds NYC program, provides access to licensed counselors and therapists at all 1,600 schools in the city.

Key Features of the Program
The program emphasizes early intervention and includes:
Individual and group counseling
Stress management workshops
Crisis support

Appointments can be scheduled through a newly launched app or by visiting the school’s main office.

Leadership and Vision
“Our students are facing unprecedented challenges, from social media pressures to the lingering effects of the pandemic,” said Schools Chancellor David Banks. “This program ensures they have the support they need to succeed both academically and personally.”

Community Response
The initiative has been widely praised for its proactive approach, though some educators have expressed concerns about potential staffing shortages. City officials have pledged to address these challenges and expand the program based on feedback from students and families.
