The 94th Academy Awards: A Night of Surprises and Historic Wins

by NY Review Contributor

The 94th Academy Awards, held on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, brought together Hollywood’s elite for an evening of celebration, drama, and historic moments. Hosted by comedian and actor Regina Hall, the event saw major wins, unexpected moments, and controversy, capturing the entertainment world’s attention.

Key players included actors, directors, and producers from across the film industry, with high-profile figures like Will Smith, who was nominated for Best Actor, and Jane Campion, nominated for Best Director for The Power of the Dog. Campion made history by becoming the third woman to win the Best Director Oscar in the 94 years of the Academy Awards. The evening’s biggest surprise came when Smith, who had won Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard, was involved in an altercation with comedian Chris Rock, after the latter made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The incident stunned audiences, overshadowing other moments during the evening.

The night’s biggest honors included the awarding of Best Picture to CODA, a film about a hearing child in a deaf family. Directed by Sian Heder, CODA made history as the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to win the top prize. Best Director went to Jane Campion for The Power of the Dog, and Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

Other notable wins included Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, marking the second time a deaf actor has won an acting Oscar. His win for his role in CODA was celebrated not only for his performance but for the broader representation of the deaf community in mainstream Hollywood.

While the ceremony included many triumphs, including the emotional acceptance speeches from Kotsur and DeBose, the night was also marred by the earlier mentioned incident involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. Smith, visibly upset, walked on stage and slapped Rock after the comedian made a comment about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, referencing her condition, alopecia. The shocking moment led to a brief but tense silence in the room before Smith returned to the stage to accept his award for Best Actor, apologizing to the Academy but not to Rock directly.

The 2022 Academy Awards will likely be remembered for its historic wins, such as DeBose’s victory, and for the chaotic spectacle that unfolded with Smith’s outburst. Regardless of the controversy, the event demonstrated the evolving nature of Hollywood, where representation, diversity, and unexpected moments often take center stage.
