In an unprecedented act of solidarity with climate activists, all Broadway theaters will go dark for one night on September 28, 2024, as part of a campaign to raise awareness about climate change. Organized by the Broadway Green Alliance, the initiative is intended to highlight the arts community’s commitment to sustainability and the urgent need for climate action.

“This is about using our platform to make a powerful statement,” said Broadway star Audra McDonald, one of the campaign’s ambassadors. Proceeds from the night’s canceled performances will be donated to environmental organizations working to combat the climate crisis.

Theaters across the city have also committed to implementing greener practices, such as energy-efficient lighting, recycling programs, and carbon offset initiatives. In the weeks leading up to the campaign, casts and crews have been hosting workshops and public discussions about how the performing arts industry can contribute to a more sustainable future.

The decision to go dark for one night has drawn widespread support from both theater professionals and environmental advocates, who see it as a symbolic but impactful gesture. Broadway’s participation reinforces the message that climate action requires contributions from all sectors of society, including the arts.
