The Washington Commanders resumed Phase 3 of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on June 2, 2025, at their Ashburn, Virginia facility, marking a pivotal point in their offseason preparations. With a 12-5 record and an NFC Championship appearance last season, the team is now focused on fine-tuning its roster to build upon that success. Key position battles are emerging, particularly among wide receivers and cornerbacks, as the coaching staff evaluates talent and depth ahead of the upcoming season.
Wide Receiver Competition Intensifies
Second-year wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, a 2024 third-round pick, finds himself in a competitive battle to secure his role on the team. Despite a promising start to his rookie season, McCaffrey’s position is challenged by the arrival of rookie Jaylin Lane, selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Lane’s speed and versatility have caught the attention of coaches during OTAs, suggesting a potential shift in the depth chart.
“Jaylin brings a dynamic element to our offense,” said Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. “His ability to stretch the field and contribute on special teams adds valuable depth to our receiving corps.”
McCaffrey, known for his strong work ethic and football lineage, remains focused on improving his craft. “I’m here to compete and contribute wherever the team needs me,” McCaffrey stated. “Every day is an opportunity to get better.”
Defensive Backfield Sees New Additions
On the defensive side, rookie cornerback Trey Amos is making a strong impression. Drafted in the second round, Amos is expected to bring aggression and playmaking ability to Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn’s unit. His performance during OTAs has been noteworthy, with coaches praising his instincts and physicality.
“Trey has shown a natural ability to read the quarterback and make plays on the ball,” Quinn remarked. “His competitiveness is exactly what we look for in our defensive backs.”
The Commanders are also exploring options to bolster their cornerback group further. Reports indicate potential interest in veteran stars like Jalen Ramsey and Jaire Alexander, aiming to add experience and depth to the secondary.
Offensive Line Adjustments
Protecting quarterback Jayden Daniels remains a top priority. The addition of left tackle Laremy Tunsil is a significant move to strengthen the offensive line. Tunsil’s presence is expected to provide stability and enhance pass protection.
“Laremy is one of the best in the league at his position,” Kingsbury noted. “His experience and leadership are invaluable to our offensive line.”
The right tackle position is also under evaluation, with Brandon Coleman and rookie Josh Conerly Jr. competing for the starting role. Both players have shown promise, and the coaching staff is closely monitoring their progress during OTAs.
Running Back Depth Chart Developments
The running back position features a competitive battle among Chris Rodriguez Jr., Jeremy McNichols, and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Rodriguez, who contributed significantly last season, faces stiff competition from McNichols and Croskey-Merritt, both eager to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
“Each of these guys brings something unique to the table,” said Running Backs Coach Anthony Lynn. “We’re looking for consistency and versatility in our backfield.”
Leadership and Team Chemistry
Quarterback Jayden Daniels continues to emerge as a leader on and off the field. After a standout rookie season, Daniels has focused on enhancing his physical and mental preparation. His rapport with new addition Deebo Samuel is developing, aiming to create a dynamic offensive duo.
“Jayden’s growth has been impressive,” Head Coach Dan Quinn commented. “His dedication to improving and leading by example sets the tone for our team.”
Veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin, a key figure in the locker room, is in discussions for a contract extension. His consistent performance and leadership are highly valued by the organization.
Outlook for the Upcoming Season
As the Commanders progress through OTAs, the coaching staff remains focused on evaluating talent and building team cohesion. With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising rookies, the team aims to refine its roster and strategies in preparation for the 2025 season.
“Our goal is to build upon last year’s success and compete at the highest level,” Quinn stated. “These OTAs are crucial for setting the foundation for the season ahead.”
